Repointing Service Areas

We operate across the following areas and surrounding locations…

Stone Wall Repointing

Repointing stone walls is required when stone structures, retaining walls or granite facades weather over time and develop cracks or gaps which compromise their structural integrity. In particular, sandstone and limestone walls tend to erode under harsh environments, making them susceptible to deterioration. Repointing can restore these natural features back to their former beauty and strength by replacing the mortar joints that have become worn down, which is essential to prevent water entering and loosening the stones. Repointing stone walls requires expert craftsmanship that respects their natural aesthetic and ensures durability over time. It is of high importance that the correct mortar mix is matched to the type of stone and structure. Common stone repointing services we provide are:

  • Sandstone wall repointing
  • Limestone wall repointing
  • Granite wall repointing
  • Retaining stone wall repointing
  • Garden wall repointing

Historic Stone Building Repointing

Repointing local historic stone buildings, especially grade 2 and 3 listed buildings requires carefully balancing preservation techniques and restoration materials to maintain their architectural and historic value in line with UK regulations. Historic stone buildings and structures serve as testaments of regional history; from medieval castles to local sandstone or limestone homes, each of these structures represents hundreds of years of regional history. Over time, mortar joints will deteriorate due to weathering or just simply wear and tear. This degradation poses serious threats to building integrity, potentially leading to further damages, compromising their structural integrity. Repointing historic stone buildings requires the use of traditional materials and methods, which complement original construction techniques and strengthen the bond between the stones. At NE Repointing Services we use only eco-friendly and heritage approved materials to carefully match the original materials used within your building. Repointing these buildings correctly is imperative and must be carried out by experienced professionals.  Please get in touch to discuss your project or request a free quotation. Garden Stone repointing

Garden Stonework Repointing

It is important to repoint stonework in garden and landscape environments, such as walls, paths, steps, piers and arches. Weather conditions such as rain, sunlight and temperature fluctuations can cause the mortar joints of garden and landscape features to degrade over time. This leads to cracked, loose stones and gaps, which threaten structural integrity. The heavy foot traffic that occurs on steps, paths and staircases can also accelerate the wear of mortar. Our team will carefully remove the old and worn down mortar, and then replace it with new material to restore strength and secure bond between stones. This creates a safe and welcoming outdoor space for years to come. The repointing of stonework will improve durability, safety and aesthetics in the garden. Contact us to receive a quote for your project or discuss it further. Our  patio repointing service will bring life back into your tired stone patio. Common garden stonework repointing services we provide:

  • Garden wall repointing
  • Stone path repointing
  • Stone patio repointing
  • Stone step repointing
  • Stone steps/staircase repointing

Stone Fireplace Repointing

It is important to repoint stone fireplaces in order to maintain their appeal and safety; as the mortar joints of stone fireplaces will often deteriorate with age and use. Older stone fireplaces with lime mortar are particularly prone to damage, resulting in loose mortar, cracks, holes, and loose stones. This can compromise the structural integrity of the fireplace and pose a potential fire risk if not addressed correctly. Modern stone fireplaces containing cement mortar may also experience wear and tear from heat exposure and expansion/contraction cycles, leading to cracking of their mortar surface and erosion of its edges. To repoint stone fireplaces, the deteriorated cement mortar must be carefully removed and replaced with high-grade fresh mortar suitable for the stone type. This will provide a tight seal for the stone, whilst giving it support. Repointing not only improves the safety and functionality, but also its visual appearance. This gives homeowners peace-of-mind that their fireplace will be long lasting. Our team will take care to use the most appropriate mortar mix for the job at hand, providing many years of structural integrity. Get in touch to discuss your project or to request a free quote.

Our Repointing Process

Evaluation & Quote

Firstly we will evaluate your property to understand the current condition of the building or structure; the building materials originally used, mortar type and colour, and the extent of the existing damage or deterioration to the mortar joints. We will also establish the area size and whether equipment such as scaffolding or access machinery is required for the job. We will then provide you with a detailed quote.

Preparation

When you have accepted the quote and signed your agreement we will begin work within our agreed timeframe (weather permitting). We will start by thoroughly preparing the area and assembling any required access equipment. Our craftsmen will then carefully remove all the existing damaged, loose, or deteriorated mortar joints with a chisel or a grinder. The area is then brushed off, cleared and is now ready to be repointed.

Restoration

Our craftsmen will carefully comprise and mix mortar that is specific to your property repair. The mortar will match the material used when your property was constructed, also matching the original colour as closely as possible. Breathable lime-based mortar mixes are most commonly applied but this can vary. Your property is then repointed and the joints finished to specification. Finally the joints are brushed and the area cleared and tidied. Job done! 🙂

Stonework Repointing FAQ

Signs that your stonework may need repointing include soft, crumbling or cracked mortar, gaps in the mortar between stones, water infiltration, and any visible deterioration of mortar joints.

All stonework will eventually require repointing at some stage in time, but the frequency of this depends on various factors such as the age of the building, the quality of the original mortar, and environmental conditions. Good quality stonework repointing can last up to 100 years or longer.

The type of mortar used for stone repointing will depend on the type of stone used within the structure. It is highly important to use the correct mortar mix to match the specific requirements of the project. Commonly used mortar mixes include traditional lime mortar, hydraulic lime mortar, cement mortar, and lime-cement mortar mixes.

Each stone repointing project is unique so will depend on factors such as the size of the stonework area that requires repointing, the extent of the existing mortar deterioration, area access ease, and weather conditions. Small jobs can be done within days, whereas larger jobs can take several weeks.

Stone repointing will compliment the appearance of the existing stonework, however, the colour and texture of the new mortar may slightly differ from the original, appearing fresher; as it will not contain any dirt, moss or other environmental contaminants.

Yes, good quality stone repointing can improve the energy efficiency of your home or building by sealing cracks and gaps, reducing air leakage and damp, and preventing surface heat loss.

The cost of stonework repointing will depend on various factors such as the size of the job, accessibility, preparation work required, the type of mortar used, and labour costs. Typically stone repointing can cost anywhere between £40 - £80 per m² depending on the complexity of the project.
